Emergency Situations
An emergency is any event or situation that threatens serious damage to people and/or the environment. The sorts of emergencies that could affect people in West Yorkshire include things like flooding, severe weather conditions, industrial accidents or an outbreak of pandemic influenza.
We want everyone to think about emergency situations before they happen and to have information in advance about what to do and where to go to find help and advice. Being prepared means everyone will be as safe as possible in an emergency situation if it should happen.
The Government has already done some work to try and make sure everyone is ready for emergencies. You may remember getting a copy of this booklet through your door: Preparing for Emergencies – What you need to know was delivered to every household in the UK and tells you how you can help yourself and your family in emergencies. A lot of this information is based on common sense advice and may seem obvious or familiar to you, but it has saved lives in the past. It is a good idea to keep this booklet to hand, somewhere you could find it quickly in an emergency.
If you no longer have a copy of the booklet, you can find it on the internet by clicking here.
Information on many local aspects of dealing with emergencies can be viewed on your local authority, Police, Fire and Rescue Service, or Ambulance Services websites, as well as many other sites – click for a list of useful websites.
